About this episode
On this episode of Marquis Masters, host Ryan Estes welcomes Alexis Johnson-Mack, a registered nurse who earned both her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) in April 2024. Working nights on a hematology-oncology unit at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Alexis shares her experiences caring for patients facing cancer diagnoses, the challenges confronting today’s nursing workforce, and the personal experiences that shaped her commitment to healthcare.
Inspired by her parents’ dedication to service and the compassionate care her grandmother received during her final hospitalization, Alexis explains why she chose oncology nursing. She discusses the emotional complexity of helping patients navigate cancer treatment, the importance of offering reassurance and a listening ear, and the hope that comes with witnessing patients complete treatment and enter remission. She also addresses persistent challenges in healthcare, including staffing shortages, fatigue, and the need for better resources and more thoughtful patient-staffing ratios to support both experienced nurses and newcomers to the profession.
Alexis reflects on how the COVID-19 pandemic affected healthcare workers and patient care, including the loss of in-person family support for hospitalized patients. She emphasizes that family members can play an important role in patient care because they understand their loved ones in ways healthcare professionals may not. While technology and medical advances continue to improve treatment, Alexis believes that personal interaction, empathy, and human connection remain essential to caring for patients.
Beyond her professional life, Alexis discusses balancing night-shift work, marriage, family, and motherhood. Following the devastating loss of her son, she speaks candidly about navigating grief and the challenges of the postpartum journey. She shares how walking, journaling, therapy, and making time for loved ones have helped her care for her physical and mental well-being. She also discusses her interest in women's health, her ambition to pursue a doctorate in nursing, and her long-term goal of becoming an entrepreneur.
Throughout the conversation, Alexis credits her mother as a major source of inspiration, describing her strength and positivity in the face of breast cancer and other life challenges. Her guiding motto is simple: “Live your life.” Rather than continually postponing meaningful experiences, she encourages people to pursue what makes them happy, make time for themselves, and embrace life's opportunities. The episode also features lighter conversations about family traditions, Southern hospitality, favorite recipes, travel aspirations, and the enduring comedy of the Rush Hour films.
